Panettone from Milan

Italian panettone from Pastoral

So it’s December 22nd. Got your cards sent and gifts wrapped? Me neither. After working flat out the past few weeks, I decided it’s time for some comfort and joy before I head into the kitchen for a marathon session of baking and cooking. So to put me into the holiday mood I picked up some panettone.

To be honest, I was never a huge fan of this traditional Italian Christmas bread until I tried this beauty sold at Pastoral in Lake View ($12.99), which arrives fresh from Milan, where panettone originates. As you pull off the ribbon and unwrap the paper, the fragrant sweet dough, candied citrus peels, and plump raisins lets you know this is the real deal. Its natural flavors and moist and fluffy texture are sure to win you over.  Have it for breakfast, with afternoon coffee, or after dinner with champagne. I’m making myself a cup of steaming tea, starting my morning with a slice, and feeling myself already shift into the Christmas spirit.
